OB-1 Cue Shaft Carbon Fiber Pad Replacement

Occasionally, it may become necessary to replace the Carbon Fiber pad between the tip and the ferrule on all OB-1 cue shafts. The pad is a special piece and is only available from OBCues.

The old pad may be machined away with a conventional carbide lathe tool.

Once the pad is gone, wet the end of the cue shaft with a drop of thin CA, or super glue, and let it cure. The center core is balsa wood, so this will firm it up and give you a good surface to cut. If the pad has come off during play, it may have taken some of the balsa core with it. Just fill the surface with a small amount of 5 minute epoxy and let it setup. Then machine it flat making sure that you machine down to the ferrule and do not have a thin film of epoxy between the ferrule and the pad.

Lightly sand one side of the pad with 220 to give it a good surface for the CA to adhere to.

Wet the tip end of the cue shaft with thin CA, and then put Gel CA on the pad itself. Press the pad to the end of the cue shaft before the thin CA starts to setup, and hold in place until the glue has cured. This usually takes from only a few seconds, up to about 30 seconds depending on your climate conditions. The thin CA will penetrate the end of the wood ferrule and shaft, and will mix completely with the Gel CA that will have a good mechanical bond to the pad.

Lightly sand the face of the pad with 220 to accept the tip, and glue on the new tip in the traditional manner. Do not trim the pad before installing the new tip. Trim them both together.

Trim the tip and the Carbon Fiber Pad to diameter at the same time using a sharp carbide tool. Remember, the pad will dull a steel tool immediately, so use Carbide. Always move the tool towards the ferrule (cutter moving towards the lathe chuck), and not away from it. Cutting away from the ferrule will loosen the Carbon Fiber Pad and cause it to come off during play.
